“When you're in a state of chronic stress, you become overwhelmed. When you're in a state of overwhelm, everything becomes overwhelming."
Sleep deprivation has been linked to various physical and mental health issues such as heart disease and attack, high blood pressure, and stroke. In this episode, Dr. Lulu Shimek and I got the chance to discuss the importance of having a night of proper sleep and its effectiveness to reduce your stress level and improving concentration, alertness, and mood.
1. Keep the Cortisol Level on the Right Curve
Cortisol is often referred to as the “stress hormone”, as it is released from the adrenal glands in response to our body’s fight-or-flight response. But cortisol isn’t only linked to stress. This hormone is also necessary for us as it increases heart rate and blood pressure. We would want our cortisol level to increase in the morning so that we will have the energy to go through the day. If we don't control sleep very well, the curves will reverse. Some ways to keep your cortisol level even are reducing chronic stress as much as possible and eating enough protein.
2. Restore Our Body Functionality
At nighttime, our body is cleaning up. During sleep, our body enters a restorative phase so that our cells can regenerate properly. In addition, your brain sorts and processes the day’s information which is particularly necessary to create long-term memories.
You also go through a detoxification phase where the body collects everything it doesn't need. A good night’s sleep is the perfect time for your body to get rid of the toxins so you can wake up refreshed and rejuvenated. Studies have shown that during sleep every part of the body is affected: growth and stress hormones. The immune system, appetite, breathing, blood pressure, and cardiovascular health.
3. Creates a Positive Routine
Having proper sleep makes your cortisol level increase. It builds energy to do positive activities like yoga or meditation. It also allows your body to restore itself and detoxify. Meditation is an important aspect of your routine. Improving your meditation routine has benefits like inner peace, increase self-awareness, better perspective for life, and mental toughness.
If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, maybe it’s time for you to go through your routine and see where you can improve your lifestyle. Every little change can go a long way. One of the simplest ways to start your day better is by having a proper sleep.
“If you don't have that proper sleep, you’re not going to restore your body."
