Writing can be therapeutic, and when you know what you write can inspire others, it can be rewarding too. Anyone can write, but it takes consistency and commitment to finish what you start.
In 2020, around 30-34% of e-book sales were self-published books. The statistic alone showcased how much it revolutionized the publishing industry, making it possible for anyone to publish their own book.
In this post, I'm going to share a few easy steps to writing a book based on my latest podcast episode with Jyotsna Ramachandran from Happy Self Publishing. So, what are the tips to finish writing a book if you're planning to self-publish it?
Finding a purpose in everything you do is the top tip to finishing what you started. Knowing your reason to write will be a great help to stay focused because, without it, the next distraction will take your mind away from the project.
Whether you write to inspire others or make your readers laugh with your sense of humor, it's important to know your main reason so you can manifest it into a writing piece that is aligned to it.
After all, it is easier to set the tone of your writing when you know what kind of message you want your readers to achieve from what you write.
2. Find your target readers
Just like everything in life, it is impossible to please everyone so it's vital to find a group of people who are likely to be your target readers.
Maybe you're a mompreneur wanting to write about running a business for fellow mothers in your age range so you can speak the same lingo and stay relevant, or perhaps you want to target any other groups.
Once you identify your target market, create a vision board to start visualizing what they want. This will help you generate broader aspects for your book as well. You can start developing your brand image based on the cover image that may attract them, or even the writing style that suits them.
Knowing your target audience will make it easier when you start writing because if you know your readers well, you will also know the problems and pain points you want to highlight in your writing.
3. Create an outline of your book
Never underestimate the power of a book's outline, as it will help you write a book with a clear purpose and it certainly can help ease the possibility of writer's block that you may encounter along the way.
The book outline will serve as a GPS to help you navigate through the book project. It will direct you to the primary purpose of your writing while delivering the message to your readers accordingly.
4. Form a writing ritual
Last but not least, create a ritual that will get you started. It takes a lot of consistency to write a book, so it is important for you to create the workflow that suits your lifestyle in order for you to start writing and finish it.
Once you do it, you'll slowly learn how to commit to your project and time flies fast enough when you realize that it's time for you to publish your book. So, are you ready to start writing yours?
